How/Why I Did It:

Some of our members have produced stunning images of the sea and the sky and I'm hoping that some-one can give me the advice that will turn this into a better picture.    I've tried various crops but I'm no happier with any of them.

Paula Davies I think you have the making of a good image here.  My suggestion is that you duplicate the layer and run the Motion Blur filter at 0 degrees angle and adjust the amount which will depend on your image size.  Add a new layer and fill it with white.  Change the Blend Mode of this layer to Soft Light and reduce the opacity to 50%.  Make a layer mask and select the sea, invert the selection so that the shore and sky are selected.  Fill the beach selection on the layer mask with black and the sky selection with a gradient.  You can now duplicate this layer and its mask but change the opacity to 25%.  That is stage one leaving the image format as you have it.  I then used the crop tool and cropped out the shore and some of the sky.  If you want to see what I have done let me know and I'll send you a jpeg.
John Davies Come on Eddie! Stick to what you are best at. You will never be Irene Froy (thank goodness!). I am sure Paula will tell you how to create an ethereal minimalistic picture from this but for me it requires something of interest to tell me what it is all about. You try to create some interest by saying it is from somewhere on the continent but it could have been taken anywhere, northern France, the Galapagos Islands, Redcar. The only positive I can find is that the horizon is nearly on a third!
Cath Wright I’m a fan of open seascapes and I enjoyed looking at the lovely vivid colour of the sea on the horizon. Personally, I would crop about half of the sky, to just above the wispy clouds on the right hand side, which would focus the eyes more onto the horizon (using more of a letterbox format for the picture). It’s a lovely relaxing scene.
Simon Allen I quite like the layered effect of the bands of colour in this image - but overall I think I don't really find enough of interest to hold my attention - sorry! Perhaps it would benefit from some sort of treatment (blurring?) to make it more truly abstract in nature?
