Sunbeam
|
How/Why I Did It: I
took this photo a couple of years ago in the Himalayas. Amazing light
but very contrasty. A small part of the sky was blown
out so I toned down the exposure using the brush in raw. The
effect was to make the trees into a silhouette so I decided to try and
lighten then and bring out some of the detail. In Photoshop I
selected a colour sample from the trees and created a mask. I took the
tree section into Topaz Adjust and added in some detail and vibrancy.
Then I amalgamated the 2. I am wondering about entering this for
the woodland competition but maybe it is more about the sunbeam. I look
forward to your comments.

A
very dramatic use of the light coming through the clouds. You have
handled the contrast superbly. I do not understand what you have done
with Topaz but can only say that it has worked well the way that you
have retained the detail in the trees. I am not sure that I would use
this picture in a woodland competition as to me its all about those
powerful shafts of light with the woods only fulfilling a supporting
role.

This
is very high contrast picture which creates a good atmospheric
feel. The foreground trees are rendered almost in silhouette, but
there is just enough detail to avoid a large area of plain black.
The sunbeams and ‘shadow beams’ lead very nicely at varying angles from
the top right corner, and there is a tantalising glimpse of a village
or something in the space at the bottom. However, I think that
the top is a bit too bright and could do with toning down. The
picture, for me, is the light from the bright cloud at the top right
and the sunbeam picking out the village (or whatever), with the lovely
pattern of trees standing out against the light. I’m not sure
that it is appropriate for the Trees & Woodland set subject, but
you can’t tell with judges!! Have you thought about making it
into a mono image? It should be good as it is all about light and
shade.

Another
fantastic moody shot with the sun filtering through the clouds, a hint
of the mountains and the valley with some sort of habitation, and then
the silhouette of the trees which works really well. I would do a
little more work on the clouds to the left they look a bit flat and
almost need rim highlights on some to bring them out. Otherwise a
lovely shot and well worth considering for a comp.

At
first I thought this was a shot taken above the forest on the way to
Kildale; it bears a remarkable similarity to that landscape! This
month's photos seem to be all about light. The spread of the sun's rays
makes this very pleasing on the eye.
