Derwentwater Ferry

How/Why I Did It:

This was taken last November at ‘Surprise View’ looking down on Derwentwater in the Lake District.  The Derwentwater Ferry runs the full length of the lake and calls in at several landing stages to pick up and drop passengers.  It was turning to call in at a landing stage just out of shot at the bottom left of the image.  It was a calm, clear, sunny day and I liked the wonderful pattern made by the wake from the boat.  I had to clone out a few floating distractions and do some work to control the contrast to bring up the patterns in the water without losing too much detail on the boat.  Even so, some of the details were blown out but I hope they are not too distracting.  The picture for me is all about the pattern in the wake.

Keith Smith A lovely simple picture using the wake of the boat to take the eye across the water and to  the boat itself which you have positioned so well in the bottom left. You could almost have dispensed with the boat and just made it into an abstract  of the ripples. Either way seems to work. A very well seen shot
Carol Hudson My immediate reaction to this photo was to like it and then work why. I like the blue of the lake with all the ripples going across it with the flattish piece of water at the bottom. The boat as the focal point introduces different colours and it even has a reflection. The sweep of its wake is very pleasing and fills the picture.  I wondered whether anyone would suggest flipping it so that the boat is going from left to right but personally it doesn't bother me. Lovely picture!
Dave Wright Amazing conditions to produce a shot like this. I thought it was a model at first as the ripples/waves didn’t seem to add up to the overall scale, but if that was what it was like, perspective is a funny thing at times. The pattern effect is striking and the boat position is right for the lead into the bottom left, amazing shot.
Barbara Dumphy I found this to be a perfectly composed shot - that lovely wide expanse of blue and those delightful ripples of water in an arc from the boat and the boat itself catching the late - or early - sunlight. Really beautiful. I can't see how it could be improved!
