The Bottom of Honister Pass
|
How/Why I Did It: This
was taken on a visit to the Lakes in early November. The picture was
very contrasty and I have had to select various areas to obtain the
contrast that I liked. |

It’s
a lovely scene with an amazingly clear blue sky. Unfortunately,
the brilliant weather has produced very strong highlights and
correspondingly dark shadows. Although you have worked on the
image to reduce the contrast, I feel that is still somewhat
overpowering. A five shot HDR combination would probably given a
good result, but given that there is only a single shot, I wonder if a
spot of Shadows/Highlights adjustment would help. However, I
think you could have a stunning panoramic shot of the sunlit trees by
cropping (severely) to take out everything except the foreground trees
and some of the dark background.

I
love the light on this one and the way that the trees and buildings are
highlighted and surrounded by a natural frame of shadow.
The light on the top of the hills is also lovely. I wondered
about whether it would benefit from some curves to accentuate the
lovely light on the trees but then you would start to lose detail
in the shadows. It is a matter of personal choice and interpretation.

Nicely
seen and caught, I love the highlights of the sun caught in a variety
of locations making you look at them and then examining the detail they
lead inside the shadows. Initially I thought some interest in the sky
would have been nice but after looking at it I think it would detract
from the lovely undulating scenery. Like it!

Unusual
use of light here with the trees at the bottom of the shot bathed in
light as are the mountains. Honister Pass is glorious and this I
imagine to be a difficult shot. I do like the use of contrast, though
the lakes do challenge us all photographically, when we capture
something like this it's always worthwhile.
